The teachers strategies that are
used in the classroom are the primary tool that causes students to fail or make
it, if the strategy you are using with your students is appropriate to the
learning situation your students will make the most of the opportunity given to
them, and on the contrary if the strategy fails to serve the main purpose of
teaching then your students are going to fail you and you will fail yourself,
so how does an effective teacher pick the proper strategy and is the strategy
picked appropriate at all times? There are different strategies to use with
different content, and a teacher must be knowledgeable of these strategies and
the best time to use each one. Questioning is one of the best strategies to be
used with different content and adapt it to different students, after all it’s
the teacher’s job is to promote students to think and to drive them to
experience the learning process, by allowing them to discover things on their
own, this helps the students to develop thinking skills and to transfer the
knowledge to relate it to their real lives. Nonetheless, teachers should know
different strategies and continuously improve their repertoire of knowledge.

In addition to what you mentioned, the questions the teacher asks should have students think at different levels. A teacher may ask students questions that only require them to recall memorized information, which would not be considered effective. Teachers should move more towards synthesis and creation which require critical thinking to come up with new things. Moreover, teachers must have students practice asking questions themselves, not only answer them.
ReplyDeleteQuestioning is really one of the best teachers' strategies in the classroom, it is a way to check students' understanding, eliminate misconceptions, and deepen their understanding. But the teacher should be aware through asking questions, she/he should not ask questions just for asking them, each question should be prepared well to be at higher levels of thinking, where those questions are used to help maintain attention, involvement, emphasis, and assessment of student understanding.
ReplyDeleteYour strategy as a teacher should be consistent with lots of factors. A teacher should come to the classroom with a predetermined strategy yet this strategy should be flexible enough to be changed. Sometimes, I would go to class with a certain pedagogical plan. My students' moods, time of the day, and most importantly the prompt obstacles that I encounter cause me to "alter" my strategy. Questioning students is but one of the strategies in teaching. You change, modify and even fix your strategy according to the classroom factors.
